As I write this I am surrounded by piles of folded nappies, rolls of bamboo & fleece fabric waiting for my attention with the familiar buzz of the washing machine and tumble dryer behind me, whilst balancing a 5 month old baby on my knee and I feel great! My efforts have proved the cynics wrong and finally my service has been born... welcoming 'Happy Nappyz' onto the market! I don't claim to be an 'Eco-Warrior', like many people today I started by hearing people talk about being 'Green'; 'Green' clubcard points, 'Green' washing temperatures, global warming (just look at our so called 'Summer' this year!) and so on! So I decided to do some digging and what I discovered along the way was pretty horrifying to be honest, but the majority of the nations concerns could be easily combated by us individuals making really small & simple changes in our day to day lives. As I was pregnant with my second child, on maternity leave, feeling good, confident about my new arrival and a little bored to be honest, I decided to delve into the great world wide web and do a little research on how I personally was, a) affecting my surrounds and b) what kind of thing I could change in order to 'Do my bit'. I found that the main concerns which affected me and my lifestyle were issues surrounding disposable nappies and the lack of landfill space left to dump them in! Once I read on, finding out what disposable nappies are actually made of, how many I was predicted to use on my unborn, and how much they would cost me over the next 2-3 years (all in my disposables Vs reusables section) that was it, I had decided to 'do my bit!' The next few months was filled with searching the net for alternatives to disposables. I bought samples of everything I could find, pulled it apart, washed it, dried it, tested it on my baby when she arrived, and settled on what I deemed the 'Best' nappy system- and this is now what I use for my Nappy Laundry Service! I had my problems to start with, from leaking to nappy rash, but after emailing manufacturers, working closely with 'The Real Nappy Campaign' and after invaluable advice from my mum (who, like all our mums used reusable nappies as they were all that was readily available back then) I combated all problems quickly and was left with a happy baby, a clean 'Green' conscience and a wealth of experience. To cut a very long story short, I was due to return to work in July 2007 after many adorable months with my baby girl and my 3 and a half year old and for some reason motherhood the second time around had changed me, made me more aware, appreciative, and yes, 'Green!'. I was already giving advice to my pregnant friends, offering to loan out my outgrown nappy supplies, and then it came to me....I could start up my own nappy laundry service. Why not I thought? It has been a hard but educational and very worthwhile journey setting this up. I have met many people who's opinions have influenced me and how I run my service, and I now feel qualified and confident in offering the mums, dads, childcare providers etc of Exeter & surrounds, a much needed & brilliant (even if I do say so myself!) Reusable Nappy Supply & Laundry Service. So here it is, Happy Nappyz! |
